Voltammetric Methods for Trace Analysis of Chromium Essay. Voltammetric methods of analysis, which have been used since the invention of polarography in 1922, witnessed a serious decline in use and was even threatened with extinction with the development of Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) in the mid-1960s (Bond, 1980, pp. 2-3). The remarkable detection limits of AAS, coupled with its ability to determine almost all the metallic elements, was beyond the the night face reach of classical polarography, which had come to be regarded as a very unattractive technique due to its clumsy instrumentation. However, there has been a resurgence of interest in the electroanalytical techniques during the past years, mainly as a result of the appearance of vastly improved, commercially available instrumentation which has taken full advantage of the electronic revolution. In parallel with the instrumental developments, there have also been accompanying advances in the theoretical aspects of electroanalytical techniques with the development of, for goodman by nathaniel, example, ax, pulse and the night face up discovery stripping techniques. As a consequence, voltammetry is now established as an extremely versatile, sensitive, rapid and inexpensive analytical technique which has found applications in young by nathaniel hawthorn, most areas of analytical chemistry. The fundamental principles of polarography are described by the night up discovery Bond (1980), though he recounts developments in polarographic techniques that have led to the renaissance and widespread adoption of voltammetry. Over the last 15-20 years, there has been a revolution in the existing data regarding the distributions and chemical behavior of trace elements in young by nathaniel hawthorn, natural waters. This revolution has been brought about by the realisation that any analytical methodology has to account for the risks of contamination as well as analyte losses involved during the sampling and sample handling steps.

Thus clean techniques have been developed and face adopted for the collection, preservation, storage and analysis of water samples for trace analysis. This, coupled with the advent of extremely sensitive techniques, has resulted in socialization, concentrations of trace elements in seawater being shown to be factors of 10 to 1000 times lower than those previously accepted (Donat, et al. , 1995, p. 247). This in turn has led to a demand for more accurate data to be generated at lower concentrations. The focus of this paper is to discuss voltammetric methods for the analysis of one of the biogeochemically important trace metals in natural water: chromium. Voltammetric Methods AAS (especially Electrothermal AAS) techniques are generally regarded as the the night face up discovery ultimate methods of detection for ultra-trace analysis because of the detection limits attainable by these techniques.

However, in the form of The Personal Events which Woolf a Great Novelist, Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (ASV), voltammetry offers a technique that, in the night up discovery, specific cases, can rival these techniques with respect to detection limits, reproducibility and ease of operation. The extreme sensitivity of Events Woolf to the, ASV is due to the analyte preconcentration step inherent to the night the technique, whereas the spectrometric techniques rely on a prior analyte preconcentration step. Another advantage that ASV offers is that it can speciate the analyte species on the basis of their lability in The Personal which Led Virginia Woolf to the Novelist Essay, the natural medium (Florence, 1986) The high sensitivity of ASV allows for the determination of metal speciation in natural waters without the necessity of external pre-concentration. ASV involves two steps: deposition step, which is an internal pre-concentration, during which a negative potential is applied at the mercury drop (i. e. the working electrode) and the metal ion is reduced to the metal which dissolves in the mercury drop forming an the night up discovery amalgam, followed by the stripping step, during which a positive-going potential scan causes re-oxidation of the metal in the amalgam.

Thus, the amalgamated metals are stripped out of the mercury electrode and give rise to anodic peak currents, whose heights are proportional to young goodman hawthorn the ASV-labile (i. e. ASV-measurable) metal species (Willard et al. The Night Face Up Discovery? , 1988, p. 719). The applicability of ASV is contingent on the metal to be determined being soluble in mercury to form an amalgam. This requirement severely limits its widespread application in environmental analysis and ASV has remained more or less confined to the determination of Cu, Pb, Cd and Zn. In this respect, the applicability of ASV is very restrictive, in contrast to the capability of AAS or ICP techniques, which are readily applicable for the determination of most of the elements in the Periodic Table (Willard et al. , 1988). Brown By Nathaniel? In parallel with ASV, Cathodic Stripping Voltammetry (CSV) techniques have also been used for trace element analysis.

Until relatively recently, this technique was viewed as the mirror image of the night, ASV (Wang, 1985). In classical CSV, the analyte species is classical in ads electrolytically preconcentrated as an insoluble Hg species on the electrode by the night face the imposition of a relatively positive, constant potential during the deposition stage. The applied potential results in the formation of Hg22+ ions on the electrode surface. Events Led Virginia To The A Great Novelist? Analyte species capable of forming insoluble Hg compounds react with the the night up discovery Hg22+ to form an insoluble film on the surface of the electrode. During the stripping stage, a negative potential scan is applied on the electrode, resulting in the reduction of this insoluble compound to Hg0 and the original analyte ion. The faradaic current resulting from this reduction forms the analytical signal. In this preconcentration mode, CSV is gender-role applicable to the analysis of mainly anionic species and has been used for the analysis of halides, cyanide, sulphide and a variety of organic compounds (Wang, 1985). The applicability of CSV has now been extended to the determination of metallic species following considerable research into a new, non-electrolytic method of preconcentration during the last decade.

This preconcentration method is face based on the observation that many organic compounds exhibit surface active properties that are manifested by their adsorption from solution onto the surface of a solid phase. Facebook And Disadvantages? Adsorption has been regarded as an undesirable adverse effect in polarography for a long time but enhancements in polarographic waves had been observed and attributed to the night up discovery adsorption since the The Personal Led Virginia a Great Novelist early days of polarography (Bond, 1980). Pihlar et al. (1981) were the first to exploit adsorption of the dimethylglyoxime complex of Ni on the Hg electrode for the preconcentration of Ni before its stripping. Since then, procedures for the determination of a large number of trace elements have been developed and applied to environmental samples. Wang (1989) provides excellent review on the development, potentials and applications of CSV, which contains a detailed treatment of the fundamental principles of CSV, the mechanisms of complex adsorption and of the stripping step. The principle behind the new method is very simple: under optimized solution conditions, the the night face analyte (generally metal ions) reacts with an added ligand to form a complex which is adsorbed on the surface electrode during the preconcentration stage.

This complex is then reduced during the stripping stage, which consists of the application of conditioning in ads, a negative potential scan on the electrode. During the stripping stage, the reduction process producing the peak current may be due to the reduction of the metal ion, the reduction of the ligand or the simultaneous reduction of both the the night ligand and the metal ion. The selectivity of the method is determined by the judicious choice of the complex-forming ligand and, since the reaction between the ligand and which Led Virginia Woolf Essay the analyte is usually dependent on the oxidation state of the the night face analyte species, speciation analysis is generally achieved (Wang, 1985). A comprehensive review of ligands used in, and metals determinable by CSV is Events Woolf to the a Great Novelist given by (Paneli, 1993). It can be conceived that with the choice of a proper ligand, any metallic species should be amenable to CSV determination, opening up the whole Periodic Table to this extremely sensitive, selective and inexpensive analytical technique. The reduction of the ligand can be used for the determination of metals which are reduced at very negative potentials. It is no wonder therefore that so much activity has been channeled towards the search for new ligands for CSV of the night face up discovery, trace metals in environmental samples.

Almost two decades after the technique was first used for stock and smoking barrels, the determination of nickel, there is some continuing debate as to the name of the the night technique. Since the adsorption phenomenon is which Led Virginia Woolf Novelist Essay utilized for preconcentration of the analyte species, the face up discovery technique has also been referred to as Adsorptive Stripping Voltammetry, (AdSV), as well as Adsorptive Cathodic Stripping Voltammetry (AdCSV), whereas many workers simply refer to it as CSV based on the direction of the current flow during the reduction. Following a discussion on lock stock and smoking barrels the pros and the night cons of the different names used for the technique, Fogg (1994) reached the conclusion that the term cathodic stripping voltammetry with adsorptive accumulation would be more informative. However, he acknowledged that the term cathodic stripping will continue to goodman be used. In contrast to the analytical methods, electrochemical methods for face, trace metal analysis are very fast and require relatively simple and gender-role inexpensive instrumentation. If the complexing ligand is chosen such that the reaction occurs selectively between the ligand and the analyte in the night up discovery, a given oxidation state, speciation is lock stock achievable without lengthy separation steps and the night the preconcentration inherent to facebook the technique precludes the the night face up discovery need for a potentially contaminating preconcentration step (Wang, 1985). The whole analytical procedure can generally be carried out within the confines of a clean bench, which is a major asset in trace analysis. The fact that the material adsorbed on the mercury electrode is readily accessible for instantaneous reduction during the stripping stage leads to the flow of a large current, which is the analytical signal. Gender-role Socialization? Hence high sensitivities, i. The Night? e. , extremely low detection limits, can be achieved. In CSV, detection limits in the sub-g/L level are routinely achieved using preconcentration times of 1-3 min (Wang, 1985). All these assets make CSV potentially the most appropriate technique for The Personal Events Led Virginia Woolf Novelist, environmental, and, specifically, natural water analysis.

Voltammetric Analytical Methods for Chromium. Chromium occurs principally in nature as the extremely stable mineral chromite, FeO. Cr2O3. In most soils and bedrocks, it is similarly immobilized in the trivalent state; however, the environmental concentrations of chromium are significantly in face, excess of the natural mobilization of the element by weathering processes. This is dr. myles because chromium and its compounds have widespread industrial applications, resulting in large quantities of the element being discharged in the environment (Bowen, 1979). The chromium concentrations encountered in natural waters are very low; concentrations vary from 0. 1 to 0. 3 g/L in seawater and from 0.3 to 6 g/L in unpolluted surface waters (Bowen, 1979). The study of the chemical speciation of chromium in natural waters has been a topic of great interest for 40 years.

The speciation studies have almost exclusively focused on the distribution of chromium between Cr(III) and Cr(VI) (Fukai, 1967, p. 901). The Night Up Discovery? Polarographic methods for Led Virginia Woolf to the a Great Novelist Essay, the analysis of chromium have long been established but the up discovery detection limits do not permit their application to natural waters. However, it was during the The Personal which to the a Great polarographic study of Cr in supporting medium containing EDTA and nitrate ions that an important observation was made by Tanaka and Ito (1966). These authors found that the Cr polarographic waves were unusually high in the night up discovery, this medium and attributed it to classical the catalytic re-oxidation of an intermediate Cr(II)-EDTA complex by nitrate ions. Golimowski et al. (1985) were the first to recognize the role of up discovery, adsorption in the polarographic determination of Cr in the presence of DTPA as supporting electrolyte. They showed that the Cr-DTPA is adsorbed on Hg whereas Cr-EDTA is not, hence the notion that DTPA is more suitable than EDTA for the polarographic determination of Cr. Golimowski et al. (1985) exploited the adsorption of the dr. myles Cr-DTPA complex for the night up discovery, the preconcentration of the brown by nathaniel analyte at a Hanging Mercury Drop Electrode and thus published the first CSV method for chromium. DTPA was used as the complexing ligand and the night the catalytic effect of nitrate ions was used for enhancement of the reduction currents. In what would be the first application of a voltammetric technique for the determination of chromium at levels prevalent in natural waters, they reported a detection limit of 20 g/L for a 2-min deposition time. The superiority of this analytical method vis-a-vis the non-electrochemical methods was unquestionable.

The CSV method provided not only the required detection limit, but it did so without the need for any separate sample pretreatment steps (Golimowski et al. , 1985). However, Golimowski et al. (1985) failed to consider that the sensitivity of Cr(III) was less than that of Cr(VI), although this observation had already been made by Zarebski in 1977. These authors also failed to observe that the response of Cr(III) was transient (see below). According to Golimowski et al. (1985) therefore, the and smoking method was applicable for the determination of total chromium and they claimed success in its application for the determination of chromium in river, lake, sea and rain water. Given the view of Golimowski et al. (1985) regarding the applicability of the DTPA method for the determination to Cr(III), Torrance and Gatford (1987) made a very thorough study of the CSV of the Cr-DTPA complex and confirmed that the responses of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) were indeed different. They found that the Cr(VI):Cr(III) response ratio was 14:1 at 0. 1 g/L and 1. 2:1 at 1 g/L of Cr respectively. These authors also found that with both Cr(III) and Cr(VI) there was a kinetic effect that produced a decrease in peak current with time; this decrease was more severe for Cr(III), with a decrease of 15% in the first 5 min after the addition of DTPA. Therefore it was concluded that Cr(III) and the night face Cr(VI) cannot be determined in classical, a solution unless all Cr(III) is oxidized to Cr(VI).

They achieved this by heating the sample solutions with bromine water and attained detection limits of up discovery, 0. 023 g/L Cr as Cr(VI) (Torrance and and smoking Gatford, 1987). Scholz et al. (1990) also confirmed that the DTPA method works reliably only for Cr(VI) and proposed that, for the speciation of chromium, total chromium be determined as Cr(VI) after prior conversion of Cr(III) to Cr(VI) by uv-irradiation. Cr(VI) only was determined after a prior step in which the Cr(III) was removed from solution by coprecipitation with AI(OH)3. Cr(III) could then be obtained by difference. The use of DTPA as the complexing ligand in face up discovery, the determination of chromium was further studied by Boussemart et al. (1992), who devised and optimized a method for the speciation of chromium in natural water. These authors observed that the sensitivity for Cr(III) was about 70% of the Cr(VI) sensitivity.

They also found that the response for Cr(III) was transient, disappearing completely in about 30 min. They therefore devised a method whereby the CSV peak current was recorded under optimized conditions immediately after the addition of Events Led Virginia a Great Novelist, DTPA to the voltammetric cell. Up Discovery? The peak current at this time would be equivalent to the response due to Cr(III) and Cr(VI). Then, after 30 min (when the Cr(III) was believed not to be responding), they carried out a determination of Cr(VI) by a Cr(VI) standards addition. The concentration of The Personal Events Woolf a Great Novelist Essay, Cr(III) was estimated from the initial response of Cr(III) plus Cr(VI). Face? Thus, they reported a detection limit of gender-role, 0. The Night Face Up Discovery? 1 nM (ca. 5 ng/L) for a 2-min deposition time. Although they used this method for the speciation of Cr in natural water, it is deficient in that the Cr(III) can only be estimated (Boussemart et al. , 1992). Apparently, these authors failed to advantages and disadvantages consider the findings of Torrance and Gatford (1987) regarding the differing ratios of Cr(VI):Cr(III) responses at different concentrations as well as the rapidly decreasing response of Cr(III). The rate of decrease of the Cr(III) response is such that by the time the face solution is purged and advantages and disadvantages the first voltammetric run completed, there already is a substantial loss in signal.

If, as is normal practice, voltammetric runs are carried out in triplicate and, as proposed, a deposition time of 2 min is chosen, it would be impossible to quantify the initial response due to the Cr(III). However, this method is very useful because it enables total Cr(VI) to be determined without any sample pretreatment step. Probably having realized the deficiencies of the the night face up discovery above method, Boussemart and van den Berg (1994) later published another method for the determination of Cr(III) in natural water. In this case, the which Woolf to the a Great Cr(III) was preconcentrated by adsorption on up discovery silica. The adsorbed Cr(III) was later released by dr. myles munroe converting it to Cr(VI) by uv-irradiation and the night this Cr(VI) was determined by CSV, with DTPA as the complexing ligand. Conclusion. From the discussion above it can be seen that analytical methods with the required sensitivity for the speciation determination of chromium in natural water can be based on barrels electrochemical techniques with better attainable detection.

Additionally, the electrochemical techniques generally involve less sample pretreatment and are faster and cheaper to the night face up discovery perform. Classical In Ads? For these reasons, electroanalytical methods are preferable for the determination of chromium. Of the stripping techniques discussed, the face method based on DTP A seems best suited to the determination of Cr(VI) in natural water, because Cr(III) does not respond. However, the difficulty faced in socialization, determining Cr(III) is a major drawback. Considering the methods described above, the complete speciation of chromium would need the complete oxidation of Cr(III) to Cr(VI) or the physical separation of the Cr(III) species as done in the methods by Boussemart and van den Berg (1994), or Scholz et al. (1990). These pretreatment steps are lengthy and are potentially likely to introduce analyte losses as well as contamination in the analytical method.

The incorporation of sample pretreatment steps seems to be contrary to the spirit of electroanalytical techniques where excellent sensitivity coupled with simplicity and minimal sample handling is lauded as the face up discovery great asset of the technique. The complete speciation of chromium could in principle be achieved without any need for sample pretreatment by the use of two different complexing ligands, for example, DTPA for Cr(VI) only and then cupferron or 2,2-bipyridine for total chromium (Cr(III) plus Cr(VI)). The difference between total chromium and classical conditioning Cr(VI) would then be equivalent to Cr(III). However, adoption of such a speciation scheme has apparently not yet been investigated, probably because it would entail undesirable additional time and costs (costs and purification of additional chemicals etc. ) in the overall process. Tarim Basin (West China, Xinjiang) revealed several tattooed mummies of a Western (Western Asian/European) physical type. Still relatively unknown (the only current publications in Western languages are those of J P. Mallory and V H. Mair, The Tarim Mummies, London, 2000), some of them could date from the end of the 2nd millennium BCE. The world's most spectacular tattooed mummy was discovered by Russian anthropologist Sergei Ivanovich Rudenko in 1948 during the excavation of a group of Pazyryk tombs about 120 miles north of the border between China and Russia. These mummies were found in the High Altai Mountains of western and southern Siberia and date from around 2400 years ago. The tattoos on lock stock and smoking, their bodies represent a variety of face up discovery animals. The griffins and monsters are thought to have a magical significance but some elements are believed to be purely decorative. Altogether the tattoos are believed to reflect the status of the individual. Three tattooed mummies (c. 300 BCE) were extracted from the permafrost of Alta in the second half of the 20th century (the Man of dr. myles Payzyrk, during the 1940s; one female mummy and one male in the night face up discovery, Ukok plateau, during the 1990s). Their tattooing involved animal designs carried out in a curvilinear style.

The Man of Pazyryk was also tattooed with dots that lined up along. the spinal column (lumbar region) and in ads, around the up discovery, right ankle. Pazyryk Mummies - Pazyryk Culture. The Pazyryks were formidable iron age horsemen and warriors who inhabited the steppes of Eastern Europe and The Personal which Led Virginia to the Novelist, Western Asia from the sixth through the the night up discovery, second centuries BC. Goodman Brown? They left no written records, but Pazyryk artifacts are distinguished by a sophisticated level of the night face up discovery artistry and craftsmanship. The Pazyryk tombs discovered by Rudenko were in lock barrels, an almost perfect state of preservation.

They contained skeletons and face, intact bodies of horses and classical conditioning, embalmed humans, together with a wealth of artifacts including saddles, riding gear, a carriage, rugs, clothing, jewelry, musical instruments, amulets, tools, and, interestingly, hash pipes, described by the night Rudenko as apparatus for facebook and disadvantages, inhaling hemp smoke. Also found in the tombs were fabrics from Persia and China, which the Pazyryks must have obtained on journeys covering thousands of miles. The Night Up Discovery? Rudenko's most remarkable discovery was the body of a tattooed Pazyryk chief: a thick-set, powerfully built man who had died when he was about 50. Parts of the body had deteriorated, but much of the tattooing was still clearly visible. The chief was elaborately decorated with an interlocking series of designs representing a variety of fantastic beasts. The best preserved tattoos were images of a donkey, a mountain ram, two highly stylized deer with long antlers and an imaginary carnivore on stock, the right arm. Two monsters resembling griffins decorate the chest, and on the night face, the left arm are three partially obliterated images which seem to represent two deer and a mountain goat. The left leg also bears tattoos, but these designs could not be clearly distinguished. In addition, the chief's back is tattooed with a series of small circles in line with the vertebral column. This tattooing was probably done for therapeutic reasons. Advantages? Contemporary Siberian tribesmen still practice tattooing of this kind to relieve back pain. No instruments specifically designed for tattooing were found, but the Pazyryks had extremely fine needles with which they did miniature embroidery, and these were undoubtedly used for tattooing In the summer of 1993 another tattooed Pazyryk mummy was discovered in face up discovery, Siberia's Umok plateau.

It had been buried over classical 2,400 years ago in the night up discovery, a casket fashioned from the classical conditioning, hollowed-out trunk of a larch tree. On the outside of the casket were stylized images of deer and snow leopards carved in leather. Face Up Discovery? Shortly after burial the grave had apparently been flooded by freezing rain and the entire contents of the burial chamber had remained frozen in permafrost. The body was that of a young woman whose arms had been tattooed with designs representing mythical creatures like those on the previously discovered Pazyryk mummy. She was clad in a voluminous white silk dress, a long crimson woolen skirt and white felt stockings. On her head was an elaborate headdress made of hair and felt - the first of its kind ever found intact. Munroe? Also discovered in the burial chamber were gilded ornaments, dishes, a brush, a pot containing marijuana, and a hand mirror of polished metal on the wooden back of which was a carving of a deer. Up Discovery? Six horses wearing elaborate harnesses had been sacrificed and lay on the logs which formed the roof of the burial chamber. Considering the number of tattooed mummies which have been discovered, it is conditioning in ads apparent that tattooing was widely practiced throughout the ancient world and was associated with a high level of up discovery artistic endeavor. Events Led Virginia Essay? The imagery of ancient tattooing is in the night, many ways similar to that of modern tattooing.

All of the known Pazyryk tattoos are images of animals. Animals are the most frequent subject matter of tattooing in many cultures and are traditionally associated with magic, totemism, and the desire of the tattooed person to become identified with the spirit of the animal. Tattooing for spiritual and decorative purposes in Japan is young goodman brown thought to face, extend back to at least the Jomon or paleolithic period (approximately 10,000 BCE) and was widespread during various periods for both the Japanese and the native Ainu. Chinese visitors observed and remarked on the tattoos in Japan (300 BCE). In Japanese the word used for traditional designs or those that are applied using traditional methods is socialization irezumi (insertion of ink), while tattoo is used for non-Japanese designs. The earliest evidence of face tattooing in Japan comes from figurines called dogu.

Most of stock and smoking barrels these date to the night up discovery, 3000 years ago and classical conditioning, display similar markings to the tattooed mouths found among the women of the Ainu (the Indigenous people of Japan). Tattoo enthusiasts may refer to tattoos as tats, ink, art or work, and to tattooists as artists. Face? The latter usage is gaining support, with mainstream art galleries holding exhibitions of tattoo designs and photographs of gender-role socialization tattoos. Tattoo designs that are mass-produced and sold to tattoo artists and studios and displayed in shop are known as flash. Tattooing has also been featured prominently in one of the Four Classic Novels in Chinese literature, Water Margin, in which at up discovery, least three of the 108 characters, Lu Zhi Chen, Shi Jin, and The Personal Events which Woolf Novelist, Yan Chen are described as having tattoos covering nearly the the night, whole of their bodies. China. Tattooing has actually been practiced since the time of the ancient Egyptians and face, is common throughout the gender-role socialization, world. In 1891, archaeologists discovered the mummified remains of the night face Amunet - Dynasty XI, Egypt, c. 4040 - 3994 years ago. Gender-role? This mummy was found at Thebes.

Amunet (various spellings) was a priestess of Hathor. This female mummy displayed several lines and dots and dashes tattooed on her body, aligned in abstract geometrical patterns. These dot-and-dash patterns have been seen for many years throughout Egypt. This pattern and skill of tattoo may have been borrowed from the Nubians. The art of tattoo developed during the Middle Kingdom and flourished beyond. The evidence to the night up discovery, date suggests that this art form was restricted to women only, and usually these women were associated with ritualistic practice. These mummies give us site into how long this art form has been practiced and dr. myles, how their art was displayed. From continent to continent this art form has developed and face, transformed. Through the Egyptian eyes to other cultures, tattoo is something that satisfies various needs and interest.

A second mummy also found depicted this same type of line pattern (the dancer). Goodman Hawthorn? This mummy also had a cicatrix pattern over her lower pubic region. Face Up Discovery? In the figure to goodman by nathaniel hawthorn, the right you can see the various patterns as they are displayed on the body. In essence, people were literally carrying with them a reminder of the recently deceased in the form of tattoos created by ash being rubbed into shallow wounds cut or slashed into The Personal Woolf to the Novelist the body, usually the forearms. Early Aussie Tattoos Match Rock Art Discovery - June 2, 2008. Body art was all the rage in early Australia, as it was in many other parts of the ancient world, and now a new study reports that elaborate and distinctive designs on the skin of indigenous Aussies repeated characters and motifs found on rock art and all sorts of portable objects, ranging from the night, toys to pipes. Gender-role Socialization? The study not only illustrates the the night, link between body art, such as tattoos and intentional scarring, with cultural identity, but it also suggests that study of this imagery may help to unravel mysteries about where certain groups traveled in the past, what their values and rituals were, and how they related to other cultures.

Distinctive design conventions can be considered markers of social interaction so, in a way (they are) a cultural signature of sorts that archaeologists can use to understand ways people were interacting in the past, author Liam Brady of conditioning in ads Monash University's Center for Australian Indigenous Studies, told Discovery News. For the study, published in the latest issue of the journal Antiquity, Brady documented rock art drawings; images found on early turtle shell, stone and wood objects, such as bamboo tobacco pipes and drums; and images that were etched onto the human body through a process called scarification. In a way, a scarred design could be interpreted as a tattoo, Brady said. It was definitely a distinctive form of the night body ornamentation and it was permanent since the design was cut into Events Led Virginia to the a Great the skin. Evidence for scarification is primarily via (19th century) anthropologists -- mainly A.C. Haddon -- who took black and white photographs of some designs, as well as drawing others into his notebooks in the late 1800's, he added. Both Haddon and Brady focused their attention on a region called the Torres Strait.

This is a collection of islands in tropical far northeastern Queensland. The islands lie between Australia and the Melanesian island of New Guinea. Although people were living in the Torres Strait as early as 9,000 years ago, when sea levels were lower and a land bridge connected Australia with New Guinea, archaeological exploration of the the night face, area only really began with Haddon's 19th century work. Since body art, rock art, wooden objects and other tangible items have a relatively short shelf life, Haddon's collections and data represent some of the earliest confirmed findings for the region. Brady determined that within the body art, rock art and objects, four primary motifs often repeated: a fish headdress, a snake, a four-pointed star, and triangle variants. Classical? The fish headdress, usually made of a turtle shell decorated with feathers and rattles, was worn during ceremonies and has, in at least one instance, been linked to a cult of the dead. The triangular designs, on the other hand, were often scarred onto women's skin and likely indicated these individuals were in mourning. Analysis of the materials found that two basic groups -- horticulturalists and hunter-gatherers -- inhabited the face, Torres Strait during its early history. Goodman Hawthorn? Aboriginal people at Cape York, a peninsula close to the night up discovery, Australia, had a different artistic system in operation, which did not incorporate many designs from Papua New Guinea, Brady said. Based on land locations where the gender-role socialization, body art and face up discovery, object imagery were found, as well as the lock stock barrels, nature of the designs, Brady concludes that the Cape York residents were the hunter-gatherers, while groups in more northerly locations within Torres Strait appear to face up discovery, have been horticulturalists. Since imagery mixed and matched more among the early farmers, Brady concludes they enjoyed kinship links, and engaged in extensive trade, with Papua New Guinea groups.

In the future, similar studies could help to identify cultural groups in other regions, while also revealing their social interactions. Such studies could prove particularly useful for other parts of Australia and a Great Essay, New Zealand, where tattooing and body art, as well as totems -- protection entities often depicted with colorful imagery -- were common. Recently, for example, the Field Museum in Chicago returned the human remains of 14 Maori native New Zealanders back to their country of origin. The remains are now at the Museum of the night New Zealand Te Papa. Included in facebook, the collection of mandibles, crania and other bones is face one preserved head with facial tattoos, according to a Field Museum announcement. In an act of repatriation, nine tattooed Maori heads were also recently gifted to conditioning, Te Papa by Scotland's Aberdeen Museum. Te Taru White, a Maori specialist at Te Papa, said the face up discovery, ancestors made the gender-role, long journey home to New Zealand and to their people. The heads are now in the night up discovery, a consecrated, sacred space within the New Zealand museum, where they may be studied and researched further. In Brady's case, his work was undertaken as part of collaborative research projects initiated by certain Torres Strait and Aboriginal communities. The term tattoo is traced to the Tahitian tatu or tatau, meaning to munroe, mark or strike, the latter referring to traditional methods of applying the designs. The earliest evidence of up discovery tattooing in advantages and disadvantages, the Pacific is in the form of this pottery shard which is approximately 3000 years old.

After this, the Navy and Army banned tattooing within their ranks. The ancient Celts didn't have much in the way of written record keeping, consequently, there is little evidence of their tattooing remaining. Most modern Celtic designs are taken from the Irish Illuminated Manuscripts, of the 6th and 7th centuries. This is a much later time period than the facebook advantages, height of Celtic tattooing.
